FSU Student Interviews Celebs
posted by Keyona Smith | November 29, 2017 | In Arts and CultureBrushing shoulders with celebrities is nothing for one Fayetteville State University student.
Jayda Hazley, a FSU sociology major last caught up with the Wild ‘N Out comedian, Darren Brand during his visit to FSU’s Welcome Week for an interview to talk love for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
So far, she has also had the opportunity to interview celebrities such as K. Michelle (Love & Hip Hop cast member and artist), and DJ Envy (host of the Breakfast Club on Foxy 99 and Power 105). Each of her interviewees graduated from HBCUs.
- Michelle graduated with honors from Florida A&M, DJ Envy graduated from Hampton University and Darren Brand graduated from North Carolina A&T.
Hazley stated that her interview with Darren Brand was by far the most enjoyable she’s had because of his candidness and impromptu style.
How does she manages to get all of these interviews? She wouldn’t reveal her source.
The idea to interview celebrities came to her by “pure luck.” She brought up her idea to the general manager of Bronco iRadio and got the greenlight.
After receiving her permission, she went about getting her interviews “by any means necessary,” she said.
Her first interview was with the singer K. Michelle. She reached out to K. Michelle’s record label Atlantic Records for an interview, and she got nowhere. She also reached out to K. Michelle’s booking agent before, finally, reaching out to the Crown where K. Michelle was touring. The Crown then put Hazley in touch with K. Michelle’s tour promoter which set the wheels in motion for Hazley’s new internship.
Hazley would actually love to work behind the scenes operating a camera, but turning down great opportunities is not in her plans.
“You have to live life,” Hazley said.
She was “all over the place” with her education. Hazley got an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice at Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas although she had initially wanted to attend Florida A&M. She finds Fayetteville State perfect because of its size, as FSU’s student capacity isn’t overwhelming.
When she is not reading books by Eileen Harris or Carl Webber or working with the Bronco-iRadio.com as promotions manager, she envisions herself as Mary Jane Paul, the title character that Gabrielle Union plays on her show “Being Mary Jane” and networks like a pro. She uses her experience from sociology in combination with the networking advantages of communication to tackle broader issues she notices within the communication field such as, why many students don’t listen or interact with the student radio?
Hazley wants you to keep a lookout on her coverage with WIDU’s anniversary in Fayetteville, NC, starting October 7, featuring gospel singers Kirk Franklin and Donnie McClurkin. She also will be interviewing the two FSU homecoming artists, rappers Boosie and YFN Lucci.
