FSU to Host CIAA Volleball Championship

Hampton, Va. – November 17, 2013 – The CIAA today announced that the 2013 Volleyball Championship, originally scheduled for this weekend, will resume between four contending institutions on Saturday, November 23 at Fayetteville State University (FSU). The semi-final matches will take place at 10 a.m., and the championship match will be held at 4 p.m.

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie Carpenter convened calls with the CIAA board of directors, the directors of athletics at the four participating institutions and the volleyball committee, after which it was agreed to hold the matches at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, N.C.

“There was a clear interest in exploring ways to resume the volleyball championship,” said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie Carpenter. Fayetteville State kindly agreed to be the host, and we’re grateful that our student-athletes will have this opportunity to compete.”

The four schools vying for the championship are Chowan University, Fayetteville State University, Virginia State University and Winston-Salem State University. Fans and alumni are welcome to attend the matches, which will take place at Felton J. Capel Arena on FSU’s campus. Band and cheer squads will perform at the final championship match.

Additionally, the Board affirmed the following:

  •  The CIAA and its member-institutions strongly condemn all acts of violence that impair in any way the safety, enjoyment and holistic experience of its student-athletes, administrators and followers in any way.
  •  The CIAA regards the safety and well-being of its student-athletes, administrators and followers to be of the utmost importance.
  •  The CIAA values, respects and is committed to the history and tradition of the conference, including its strength and reputation as a collection of institutions committed to the highest standards of judgment and behavior toward each other – on and off the field of competition.

The board of directors authorized Commissioner Carpenter and her designees, to conduct an investigation and report her recommendations regarding further action to the board of directors. Commissioner Carpenter commented that the investigation is ongoing and the results and recommendations will be provided to the board of directors in as expedient a timeline as possible.
