FSU Wins CIAA Football Championship
posted by Westley Reaves Jr. | November 15, 2022 | In News, SportsOn November 12, after a thirteen-year drought, Fayetteville State University’s Football team won the CIAA Championship after beating Chowan University, 31-28. This year’s game hinged on a completed field goal by redshirt senior, Elton Andrew.
The last time the team won was back in 2009, which came a few years after their back-to-back wins in 2002 and 2003. This win puts FSU 9-2 for the season and Chowan to 7-4.
The win is Head Coach Richard Hayes first CIAA Championship and FSU’s fourth title. Freshman quarterback Demari Daniels led FSU’s passing with 188 yards and 2 touchdowns, while only throwing one interception. With 43 yards rushing the ball, Daniels was named MVP of the game.
Senior wide receiver Braxton Knotts had 3 catches with 87 yards, including a touchdown. Also, junior wide receiver Barry Elliott had 4 catches and 81 yards and a touchdown. FSU’s graduate student running back Ellijah Henry had 41 rushing yards and a touchdown as well.
The Broncos’ defense was again key to winning the game. Junior line backer Gerald Simpson had 11 tackles, and graduate student defensive back Brandon Barnes-Brown had 5 tackles and an interception. In all, the Broncos had 4 sacks and limited Chowan to 158 yards in the running game.
After going back and forth with goals, with one last goal and completed field goal, the Broncos’ tied the game 28-28. The Championship title all came down to a 43-yard field goal by Andrew with :00 left on the timeclock. Your CIAA 2022 Football Champion is Fayetteville State University.
