FSU wins CIAA Bowling Championship
posted by Nicholas Robinson-Carter | April 4, 2023 | In News, SportsOn March 26, Fayetteville State University’s Women’s Bowling team won the CIAA championship after beating Bowie State University, 4-0 at AMF Lee-Hi lanes in Salem, Virginia.
The eight teams began taking to the lanes with individuals. FSU’s Jayda Gignac finished in fourth place with an average of 169.67. Cecilia Chafin finished in fifth place with an average of 167.50. In sixth place, Denise Brown finished with a 165.67 average.
Six Broncos were recognized for 2022-23 ALL-CIAA Bowling Team – Jayda Gignac, Ericka Reed, Angel Pope, Densie Brown, Cecilia Chafin, and Paige Rockwell. Rockwell was named Food Lion Women’s Bowling Tournament MVP. The Broncos also received the division title for the South and Head Coach Robert Henderson was named Coach of the Year.
Day one of the championship continued with round one of the bracket play as the Broncos were 4-0, defeating Virginia State University Trojans, 850-568 sending them to the second round.
Day two of the championship began with bracket play as the Broncos, Johnson C. Smith University’s Golden Bulls, Shaw University’s Bears, and Bowie State University’s Bulldogs advanced to the second round.
In the first game, Bowie State led 1-0 over Fayetteville State with a 172-155 win. The Broncos won the next game by scores of 189-136 to tie the series of 1-1. The next three games the Broncos defeated the Bulldogs with scores of 145-129, 214-129, and 202-147.
This led the Broncos to a 4-1 series while Bowie State faced off against Shaw in the lower bracket.
The Bulldogs swept Shaw 4-0 with scores of 167-119, 165-123, 210-145, and 180-144 to rematch against the Broncos for the championship game.
The Broncos took over and defeated the Bulldogs with scores of 177-161, 191-154, 176-146, and 192-163 for the 4-0 win.
The Broncos will compete against Prairie View A&M University on April 6 at 9 a.m. in Arlington, Texas for the National Collegiate Bowling Championship.
