FSU NABJ is Back and Here to Stay
posted by DorMiya Vance | February 28, 2022 | In Arts and CultureThe Fayetteville State University Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is back in action!
NABJ is a student-led organization focused on preparing and equipping emerging Black journalists and media professionals with the tools and training necessary for life “in the field.”
NABJ took a hiatus during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic under the current leadership of Professor Deirdre Hawkins.
As the current president of the organization, I noticed the organization had fallen off the student media scene and worked toward reviving it.
I wanted to bring this organization back to help other Black students interested in media or journalism. I would have never had the chance to experience the efforts and networking opportunities.
This organization emphasizes the Black experience within media and journalism at FSU and beyond the campus.
The Voice and NABJ will work closely together in the coming semester, further equipping students for journalism in the real world.
Students can expect to participate in service-learning projects and roundtable discussions to bring awareness to various topics like Black women in sports media, mental health improvement among local Black communities, and how to find valuable resources, such as resume-writing, on campus.
The FSU chapter of NABJ has plans to have their first campus-wide event on March 15 with its newest members to open discussion about the increase of women in sports journalism.
There will be a general meeting in the BroncoTV Studio on March 8 at 3:30 p.m. for prospective members or anyone curious to learn more about the organization.
