Fur Babies: Adopt or Shop?
posted by Shakenna Moore | March 26, 2024 | In OpinionEvery day, I watch as people walk with their dogs with one hand on the leash and the other holding their children’s hands. I’ve been told that the companionship of a pet is something that brings great joy and happiness. For some, pets offer unconditional love, emotional support, and countless moments of joy.
However, I’ve often wondered what decisions are made when bringing a pet home. Is it better to rescue or purchase a purebred?
When I was considering purchasing a puppy as a Christmas present, I did a little research into both adoption of a rescue and the purchasing of a purebred. After watching veterinarian videos and talking to pet stores, I found that rescue dogs often come from backgrounds of abandonment, mistreatment, or neglect. When you get a rescue dog that means giving a second chance to an animal that has been less fortunate. On the other hand, for some families, they like the idea of having pure breeds because they may have certain tasks for specific breeds to perform. For example, if they live on a farm, they may need a breed that does herding or hunting.
Although rescues may come with trauma and a history of health issues, purebred dogs also come with health concerns. Some breeds are prone to genetic disorders due to inbreeding.
Pet owners must realize that raising pets requires love, patience and lots of money. It’s a big deal to be a fur parent.
Ultimately, the choice between a rescue dog and a purebred dog is one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. It should be made with careful consideration of one’s lifestyle, financial situation, and willingness to provide a forever home for the pet. Whether one chooses the path of adoption or selects a purebred companion, the commitment is the same.
