Green 2019: The Green Team’s Semester in Review
posted by Jessahna Whitney, Julia Downing | November 23, 2019 | In Arts and CultureAre you or someone you know tired of that old television or computer collecting dust in the corner? Fayetteville State University’s Green Team addressed this issue earlier in the semester with a week-long electronic waste drive, which began September 23.
This E-Waste Drive allowed the general public and campus community the opportunity to recycle any old, damaged, or unwanted electronics regardless of size, condition, or origin.
Conveniently located on campus, parallel to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the E-Waste Drive bin received over 400 pounds of electronic waste for recycling. The FSU and surrounding communities need no longer worry about waiting for large-item pickup dates to relieve themselves of electronic waste because the Green Team, in collaboration with Cumberland County Solid Waste, plans to hold an Electronic Waste Drive every semester. This free service provides an environmentally-friendly option for electronics disposal.
For the Green Team, the promotion of sustainability on campus continued with a World Climate Simulation held on the October 26. The event was hosted in conjunction with Sustainable Sandhills, the Office of Civic Engagement and Service Learning, as well as various other campus-community partners.
This simulation works to educate participants about the threat of climate change by using an interactive module that computes calculated predictions of global warming based on input entered by students acting as UN delegates. The event offers insight into a major environmental issue, experience tackling a problem currently facing U.N. delegates, an opportunity for resume building, and free registration for all.
Feeling like you missed out? The Green Team plans to hold Fayetteville State’s third World Climate Simulation in the fall semester of 2020 and encourages any interested students to register through a linked flyer to be distributed via email around the beginning of Fall 2020.
The Green Team concluded their environmentally-conscious semester on November 2, hosting a campus cleanup, open to any and all volunteers looking to complete community service hours while helping to beautify the grounds of FSU.
Over 20 people showed up ready to work by 9 a.m. on a chilly Saturday morning. Organized and led by Green Team president Julia Downing, staff adviser Phavadee “Nook” Phasavath, and grounds supervisor Sylvester Washington, the Green Team and participants covered most of the campus in two and a half hours, collecting and sorting trash and recycling along the way.
In the future, the Green Team plans to host at least one campus cleanup every semester as well as continue to collaborate with other campus organizations in the name of environmental sustainability.
