Iowa Basketball Star Caitlin Clark Declares For WNBA Draft
posted by Breasia Williams | March 4, 2024 | In SportsOne of the most prolific scorers in NCAA women’s basketball of all time, Caitlin Clark, has announced her intent to declare for the WNBA Draft after her 2023-2024 basketball season with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
Despite having one more year of NCAA eligibility, Clark made the announcement on social media, stating: “While this season is far from over and we have a lot more goals to achieve, it will be my last one at Iowa.”
Just recently, Caitlin Clark has become the all-time leading women’s scorer in college basketball, surpassing Lynette Woodard, after scoring 33 points and reaching her 17th career triple-double against the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, securing a 108-60 win with her team. Woodard had 3,649 points for the University of Kansas from 1977-1981. Clark now has 3,650 career points and is still climbing for the time being.
She is just 18 points away from breaking Pete Maravich’s overall leading NCAA scoring record and becoming the all-time NCAA scoring leader.
That same night against Minnesota, Clark also sank eight 3-pointers to break the NCAA single-season record with a current total of 156 points.
Clark has clearly rewritten the record books but also built a supportive fan base in Iowa who are sad to see her go. In her announcement, Clark not only thanked her family, her teammates, and Iowa athletics staff, but also the loads of fans who have traveled and packed their arenas to watch her and the Hawkeyes perform at a high level.
The WNBA Draft will be on April 15, and Clark is the projected number one pick. The Indiana Fever, who have the first pick in the draft, indicated that they intend to select Clark after her social media announcement.
Clark has one remaining regular-season home game—against number 2 Ohio State University. The game is expected to bring one of the costliest tickets in women’s college basketball history, with tickets that have already reached record-breaking prices.
