National Rise in STDS, Get Tested, Wrap Up
posted by Cassandra Carter | November 10, 2016 | In NewsThe CDC has released their annual report, Sexually Transmitted Diseases Surveillance, 2015, and for the second year in a row rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis has increased. The highest rates are among people age 15-24.
So if you had some unprotected “homecoming cuddles” this past weekend, getting tested could ease your mind. Students can get free STD testing every 6 months with their Student Blue insurance. Students can also get rapid HIV and sometimes syphilis and hepatitis C testing during the Wellness Wednesday events held in RJSC.
Whether students are in a committed relationship or Netflix and chilling, wearing condoms helps to keep their risk of contracting an STD. Male condoms are available on campus in the UPA clubhouse, the Telecommunications Building, 3rd floor of the Capel arena, 3rd floor of Lauretta Taylor restrooms, and in Student Health Services. Female condoms, which can be worn up to 6 hours before intercourse, are available on the 3rd floor of Lauretta Taylor in the women’s restroom and in Student Health Services.
There are a variety of condoms available and for men, knowing what size to use is key in keeping STD free. Size does matter and an easy YouTube search on “How to Measure Condom Size” will help male students be smart in their condom usage.
Having “the conversation” can be awkward for many people, so Health Services have intervention groups for students. S.I.S.T.A. is for African-American women while 3MV is for gay men; these two intervention groups cover how to have the talk with partners among other topics.
While the national rate for STDs climb, FSU has given students the tools and programs to help them not be another statistic.
For more information about condom usage, intervention groups, or your wellness visit Letitia Johnson-Arnold in RJSC room 133.
