Navigating Your Way Around Mid-Semester Burnout
posted by Breasia L. Williams | October 23, 2023 | In OpinionAs we reach just past the midpoint of the semester, there are several factors that can cause burnout. College life can get hard for those who cannot get home to see their loved ones. Seasonal changes are happening which could cause mood changes and seasonal illnesses. In addition, the constant grind of going to class and turning in weekly assignments can seem like a burden amidst the real-life problems we all have.
If you’re experiencing burnout, the first thing you should know is that you are not alone. Though people make it seem like everything is fine on the outside, we all have struggles in day-to-day life, and as college students we often share a lot of the same struggles. Know that you are not alone and lean on your fellow peers for support.
Do not stop doing things you love. Balance and time management are two valuable skills that college forces you to learn. You are less likely to be hit hard by burnout if you are doing things that do not put you under so much pressure. In addition to this, take things one at a time. Each class, assignment, and fun outing that you do, focus solely on it in the time that you are doing it. Showing appreciation and seeing the value in everything you do is a trick that will ensure that you don’t begin to hate things that you once loved.
Lastly, remember your purpose. Everyone has taken a different journey to college. Do not let your journey go to waste. No one came this far just to give up. Keep your goals in mind and think about everything you will be able to do with your degree in hand.
Burnout is a mental game! Although burnout will always be there, once you master how to defeat it, times like this will be much easier to get through.
