NC DMV making schedule changes, allowing more walk-ins
posted by Nicholas Robinson-Carter | March 7, 2023 | In NewsNorth Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced on February 14 that all 115 driver’s license offices across the state are making changes to reduce wait times and increase walk-ins.
According to the NCDMV website, DMV appointments will only be available in the morning, until 11 a.m., starting May 1. All customer service-related needs will be made available through walk-ins in the afternoons.
In addition, DMVs will open an hour earlier to provide services starting at 7 a.m. at Aberdeen, Graham, Kernersville, Mooresville, Washington, and 35 other locations.
“We’ve heard from the public that they want more walk-in availability, so that’s what we’re aiming to deliver,” stated NCDMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.
Last summer, Commissioner Goodwin implemented a project called Q-Anywhere which lets customers check in at their local DMV offices with QR codes or by text to get and hold their place in line.
Goodwin states that while continuing to address concerns, “My goal is to keep adding more offices to these 40 with more hours so we can provide the services our residents need in a timelier manner.”
Beginning June 3, 16 offices will start opening at 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. This new walk-in strategy will take effect during the busiest season when the demand for new licenses is the highest.
There will be 20 self-serviced kiosks coming later this year. These devices will offer driver and vehicle service transactions such as driver’s license and vehicle registration renewal.
“My plan is to have these kiosks at various easily accessible, 24-hour locations like grocery stores and pharmacies by the end of the summer,” he continued.
“If the public responds well to this pilot program, then I plan to make even more kiosks available statewide. All with the goal of shorter lines and shorter wait times for persons requiring an in-person appointment,” said Commissioner Goodwin.
