NC Supreme Court Chief Cheri Beasley Shares Her Road to Justice
posted by Law Jones, Victoria Walker | October 2, 2020 | In NewsWith more than 20 years of judicial experience, seven years on the Supreme Court of North Carolina, four years at the Courts of Appeals, and 10 years on the District Court Bench, NC Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley is trotting a path as the first African American woman Chief Justice, right here in North Carolina. But, Chief Justice Beasley hit the ground running, right here in Cumberland County as a public defender.
In a recent interview with the chief justice, she spoke with pride and humility about those who inspired her, recalling her mother and meeting Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson, the first African American woman to serve as a North Carolina Supreme Court judge and current Democratic candidate for a Fayetteville congressional seat, for the first time. A graduate student at the time, Chief Justice Beasley was unaware that her future was looking her back at her.
Chief Justice Beasley takes great pride in herself and in the people that came before her and those that continue to clear the path, a path she says is laid with “sacrifice and appreciation” for what may one day become legacy. A legacy that she says is still being built, but will focus on service, restoration, and self-service programs.
She made sure to spotlight others, just like herself, who are doing an amazing job.
“I never make light of the sacrifices known and unknown made for my services” she said.
What made her such an incredible person to interview was her ability to show how truly thankful she is for the opportunity to serve as Chief Justice, but also how she does it, to truly serve the people. Chief Beasley said in her interview “my service isn’t about me” and it showed.
When asked about her sorority (AKA) she spoke of how proud she was of former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, a Delta, and said, “I remember how excited I was to have her as a mentor.”
It was truly incredible to sit with her, and to pick up on how she thinks about the future not only for Black people but for everyone. I know in the years to come whatever Chief Justice Beasley’s future holds for her, she will do incredibly well and have everyone’s best interest at heart.
