NFL Draft 1st Round Review
posted by Trevor Lloyd | May 3, 2024 | In SportsDay one of the 2024 NFL Draft has been one for the ages. On April 25, we saw a plethora of offensive talent come off the board as 26 of the 32 picks selected were on the offensive side. This Draft was full of stories that could be covered.
The Bears selected Caleb Williams as number 1 pick overall which was no surprise. The Washington Commanders and New England Patriots both got their quarterbacks of the future in Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye. The Arizona Cardinals are giving their QB Kyler Murray help with the selection of Marvin Harrison Jr.
However, this Draft had its fair share of surprises, such as the Atlanta Falcons taking Michael Penix Jr. as number 8 overall. This pick was a head-scratcher to say the least as the team just signed Kirk Cousins to a 4 year $180 million contract earlier this offseason. The Denver Broncos got their new quarterback of the future in Bo Nix. Head Coach Sean Payton is a huge fan of Nix’s game, so it will be interesting to see Nix in orange. The Las Vegas Raiders got tight end Brock Bowers.
Laiatu Latu was the very first defensive player taken off the board and had to wait until the 15th pick for it to happen when the Colts selected him. The Vikings QB situation has been up in the air ever since the departure of Kirk Cousins. After the Draft, that problem was solved by adding National Champion J.J, McCarthy.
The Buffalo Bills not only traded once but twice in the first round. Buffalo traded their 28 pick with the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending champions, and added to their receiver room with Xavier Worthy. The Panthers were able to select their guy in Carolina-native Xavier Legette while trading one pick up with Bills. With the Panthers getting Legette in the first round, they have a fifth-year option for him.
Going into the second and later rounds, it is expected that teams go more defensive to fill out their rosters.
