Opinion: Idea For A Fallen Bronco Memorial
posted by Troy Hobbs III | October 10, 2023 | In News, OpinionOur university has lost many students, faculty, staff and alumni. However, on our campus, there is not a memorial for the Bronco community to pay our respects. I believe that now is the perfect time to create a Fallen Broncos Memorial located on campus.
The memorial can be simple, but magnificent at the same time. It could be a statue of a Bronco or a memorial stone that states the meaning for the memorial, and could be placed on campus so that those on campus will be able to both reminisce on memories they had with students that have passed away, and pay respects to the ones that are no longer here.
The University of Idaho has started a similar process for students who have passed. In late 2022, the university began to create the Vandals Memorial Garden, set to give remembrance to four students who were killed, as well as to all the students lost at their campus.
Funding for this memorial could be obtained by hosting a sponsored sports event that explains all proceeds will go to the creation of the Fallen Broncos Memorial. Another idea is a community wide fundraiser that could ask local businesses to make charitable donations to this cause. Another way to help raise money could be a university wide yard sale, in which 50% of the proceeds go towards building the memorial, and the other 50% go towards the sellers. This could be a great way to bring the community together for a great cause.
Fayetteville State University and its Bronco community should do something to honor our fallen Broncos by creating a place for them to be remembered. It could also be a place to hold memorials and vigils for fallen students as well. This memorial should be a sacred place to remind our community that those gone shall never be forgotten.
