Opinion: Kamala a True example of Women Power
posted by Victoria Walker | October 9, 2020 | In News, OpinionIn the famous words of Maya Angelou, “Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women.” During the first vice presidential debate, those words kept repeating in my head.
See, in America, women, especially Black women, must act and speak differently when it comes to standing your ground on issues and topics with which you don’t agree. This world is quick to describe a woman as too emotional, angry, outspoken, and so much more.
That’s why when Senator Kamala Harris (D- Ca.) took the stage in the debate against Vice President Mike Pence, I applauded her for how calm and collected she remained in and throughout the debate, even when standing her ground.
“Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking”: the now famous words of Kamala Harris from a truly historic debate. Not only was Harris able to basically silence Pence, but she did it with a smile and in a way that let him know she was serious without the news or the world being able to take it and run with it. This was not the only time throughout the debate Kamala stood up for herself or spoke up for herself.
When the debate took a shift to looking at our justice system and the vice presidential candidates were asked about justice in the Breonna Taylor case, V .P. candidate Kamala was not afraid to stand her ground after her opponent made a comment that did not sit right with her.
Harris stated: “I will not sit here and be lectured by the vice president on what it means to enforce the laws of our country.” But she didn’t stop there, she continued: “I’m the only one on this stage who has personally prosecuted everything from child sexual assault to homicide.”
Throughout the debate, I was truly in awe of how she handled being interrupted, claiming her time back, and being a good example that a woman can argue in a debate without given the world a reason to mark her has anything less than amazing, powerful, graceful, and brilliant.
Sen. Kamala Harris did not just show up for the Democratic party in that debate; she showed up and pulled through as an example and inspiration to every woman in America, regardless of political affiliation race and or age. A true example of a powerful woman to represent all women in a historic vice presidential debate.
