Police Group Leads to Unrest in Nigeria
posted by Shania Ingram | November 6, 2020 | In News2020 is not just bad here in the U.S., with COVID 19 and an off-the-rails election. For the past two weeks Nigeria has been experiencing brutality at the hand of its Special Anti-Robbery Squad better known as SARS, according to the New York Times. This unit was created in 1984 with the duty of combating crimes associated with kidnapping, motor vehicle theft robbery and firearms.
Recently, the people of Nigeria have risen in extreme anger toward their government, disapproving the effectiveness of the unit, according to the New York Times. The protestors contend that since its inception, SARS has failed miserably at its role and should have been terminated years ago. The citizens appear to have reached a breaking point, stating that the unit has done nothing but used its power to manipulate, criminalize and abuse innocent people.
According to The Guardian, one of Nigerian’s leading daily newspapers, residents in the capital city of Lagos, have witnessed the overall corruption that plagues their country’s police force. They say the backwardness regarding the safety and protection of Nigerians, and not just SARS, is a complete disappointment.
Though Nigeria and the United States are for the most part on either side of the spectrum in economic and social affairs, the lack of confidence identified in the government is quite identical.
