Hispanics celebrating the Christmas holidays.
Christmas is one of the most important holidays of the annual calendar and for the Hispanic immigrant it is indispensable to keep their Christmas traditions by living and celebrating these holidays with family and friends. The decoration of their homes, carols, Christmas cards, midnight mass, decorative mangers, gifts, just like the typical dishes of their countries are what define these people.
Many think that it is more difficult to maintain the traditions of their countries, especially for the second and third generation of immigrants because these holidays have become commercial in the United States and these immigrants have adapted to this aspect. However, it will never change the feeling that this is a special time.

According to these girls, the traditions of the Christmas festivities begin from the day of Thanksgiving by decorating their homes and it continues until January 10, culminating with the octavitas which are an extension of the Christmas tradition.
Our Christmas festivities begin when families gather to cook pork, rice with pigeon peas, pickled bananas, pudding and cakes. Everyone meets at a main house and from there you continue caroling from house to house , playing the cuatro, guitar, guiro, maracas, tambourines, bells and the group continues to grow along the way until the last house will host the asopado celebrating until dawn. This is how you celebrate the holidays on the Puerto Rican Island.

For me, celebrating Christmas and the New Year are important because I share my traditions with my family and my friends.
We always decorate our house with the Christmas tree and Christmas lights. All gifts are under the tree until the night before Christmas when we open one gift. After returning from mass, we spend all night cooking turkey, ham, fruit cakes, tamales, rice with pigeon peas, potato salad, and rum punch. The following day we celebrate with a family dinner.
For the New Year, we celebrate with music and dancing.
