Students React to President Trump’s National Emergency
posted by Dominque Elliott | March 2, 2019 | In News“We will have a national emergency, and we will then be sued,” said President Donald Trump in his announcement to the nation that he will use his executive power to declare a National Emergency in the White House Rose Garden on Friday.
According to ABC news, “Congress approved only 1.4 billion dollars for the wall, but the White House said the president can get an additional 6.5 billion dollars using executing and emergency powers to shift money from other projects, most of it would come from the Pentagon.” The money will most likely be shifted from current military construction projects, including repairs to military bases from natural disasters, according to Market Watch.
Trump intends to declare a national emergency in order to get additional funding for border security. Whether, he has the grounds to declare a national emergency is quite controversial among politicians and law makers.
“We’ll possibly get a bad ruling, and then we’ll get another bad ruling, and then we’ll end up at the Supreme Court and hopefully we’ll get a fair shake,” President Trump said.
Students at Fayetteville State University have pronounced opinions about the issue.
“I don’t know how to feel at the moment.” Dominique Francis, computer science major, said. “He is trying to pass something he said he’ll do, so props. But he is focused on the wrong thing.”
“I hate that he’s wasting government time and money on his idiotic agenda,“ visual arts major Bristol McLean stated. “He’s a whining man-child, and it’s appalling he’s gotten this far as president.”
“I think it’s a waste of money and resources,” Tyree Wheeler simply stated.
“I concur,” Francis agreed. “Stop building this wall, and let the government run. We don’t need this wall. Immigration helps run this country whether we want to admit it or not. They are crippling citizens of this country. When you need to hurt people who live here to get the wall built, then it’s not worth building.”
