Proposed Increase in FSU Tuition and Fees
posted by Emily Newton | January 19, 2017 | In NewsOn Thursday, November 17, 2016, FSU held its second Tuition-Fee Forum in LSA 121 to discuss proposed increases in fees and tuition for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Provost Jon Young introduced Elliot Jackson, FSU Student Body President, who served as the speaker for the event. Jackson stressed that the proposals are simply proposals; FSU’s Tuition Fee committee plans to reconvene in early December before making any final decisions.
Proposed increases include a $59 increase for tuition and $64 for fees. Tuition would only affect new students entering after fall of 2017; for current students, tuition is fixed. Fees would affect all students, starting in the fall of 2017.
Proposed fee increases include a $50 athletic department fee (to bring an indoor female track program for females), a $14 student health services (to improve wellness plans and assessments and to cover the rising prices of prescriptions), $170-250 residence hall fee (to reduce FSU’s $6 million deferred maintenance costs), parking pass increase (for crosswalks, gated lots, fire-lane designation, and to repave and remark current lots) , a $150 Field Education Lab fee for Social Work students enrolled in 465, 580, 585, and 655 (to cover internship placement, criminal background checks, gas mileage, and BSW/MSW supervision), an increase in the MBA tuition to $598 (to be used on marketing support and specialized information technology), an increase of book rental fees, and a 5% increase for Aramark (which is part of their contract with FSU).
The aim of the forum was to gather feedback from FSU students about the proposed increases. Students voiced many concerns including the lack of access to laundry in the dorms, uselessness of the book rental program for classes requiring access codes and lab books, and a lack of increase in food quality from Aramark.
Janee Sanders, President of A.U.T.O.S., expressed concern over the lack of parking for FSU students, especially near the Student Center when the lot is reserved for special visitors.
Jackson took diligent notes of each concern and promised to address each of them when FSU Tuition Fee Committee reconvenes. A final forum will be scheduled in January of 2017 to inform students of which proposals were approved by the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees.
