The Bane of Education: Examinations
posted by Jordan Chigubu | October 24, 2022 | In OpinionQuizzes and exams are two things, to say the least, that most college students despise.
For freshmen and transfers, these tests might feel more difficult than what you’d expect. There is this overwhelming feeling of pressure no matter how much you study.
Now there might be some freshmen that excel on tests, but it just seems like 95% of the time it’s the other way around.
One of the biggest factors into why most students don’t like test day is because they have poor time management skills. Studying the night before or on your way to said class is a massive red flag. Pulling an “all-nighter” leads to you not getting the right amount of sleep your body needs to re-energize and function. Doing that will not only make you sleepy during the test but it lessens the amount of material retention.
So, before you attempt to do that ask yourself this: Is it worth it for real?
The answer to that question is 50/50. The anxiety you get on test day is a terrible head space. Not only is that pressure two times worse than before but it makes you unable to think straight. That is something you can’t have happen to you.
Make sure to always take deep breaths so you can calm your nerves down and not overreact to the little things going on. After you finish the test and you get your results, you should go over everything to see what you got wrong and how you can improve for the next test. Another thing you could do is ask the teacher to go over your mistakes during office hours. Doing these steps will give you a better understanding of your mistakes and gain more knowledge about the subject.
Finally, have a positive attitude heading into test day. Yes, I know that is way easier said than done but by doing this one thing—and of course studying—it gives you a better chance to pass the test rather than constantly saying you’re not going to pass. A negative mindset can only result in a negative outcome.
