HBCU Football Spotlight: Tyler Flemming
posted by Suryah Ethridge, Zaire Jones | March 12, 2024 | In SportsTyler Flemming is an offensive lineman, originally from Winston-Salem, who currently plays football for Fayetteville State University, and he was recently selected to participate in the HBCU Legacy Bowl. The HBCU Legacy Bowl is sponsored by Allstate, and it is a football showcase that invites some of the best football players from HBCUs that are NFL draft eligible.
This is a huge honor for this Bronco.
Flemming is not only a football player but he is also a proud member of the fraternity Omega Psi Phi. He manages to balance his social life, schoolwork and football by “being able to make time.” He finds a way to balance everything and by “taking it day by day.” He said that being a football “is a great experience,” and that his “coaches, family and [other] players, kept me going.”
By being able to overcome obstacles and many challenges, he was able to be invited to participate in the HBCU Legacy Bowl.
Being invited to the HBCU Legacy Bowl is a huge feat. It means that he is considered to be a part of the best HBCU football players in America. Flemming describes this experience as an honor.
“I met a lot of people and made a lot of connections,” he said.
He even had the opportunity to meet some NFL players.
Being invited meant a lot and Flemming said that it meant that “someone is actually looking at me and giving me a chance.”
This was an opportunity that took him by surprise because he actually has scouts looking at him and recognizing his talents in the off season.
Being not only a football player but also a scholar, Flemming has to prepare himself mentally and physically for the next stage especially with him playing a tough position such as offensive line.
Flemming named plenty of skills that can translate to the next level such as: “my speed, my strength, my IQ and obviously, my size.”
Flemming is over 6 feet tall, so his size along with his academic achievements play a great part of his success.
Flemming is inspired by multiple people. The people who inspire him keep him going so that he can accomplish his dream to play in the NFL or the CFL. He is inspired by many people but those who stand out are Keion Crossen and Joshua Williams.
He said: “They paved the way and gave me a shot.”
The two players he is inspired by were also students of FSU who went on to play professional football with the NFL.
Flemming has a lot of talent, and he is starting to gain traction. There are people looking at him along with several of his teammates who include: Quran Blount, Nigel Fitzgerald, Gerald Simpson and Jalen Morris. All of them were invited to represent FSU at the HBCU Legacy Bowl. These men have great skills and are considered to be some of the best collegiate players. Be on the lookout for these names in the future.
