Trap-N-Paint
posted by Brandon Owens | December 5, 2018 | In Arts and CultureThe Trap-N-Paint HBCU Tour made a stop at Fayetteville State University November 15 at the Rudolph Jones Student Center. The event saw the ballrooms filled with students participating in activities such as painting, music, and even a karaoke contest. All evening, rap music blasted through the room causing participants to sing loudly. With that, the event proved to be a huge hit.
Alexis Thomas, who hosted the event explained the Trap-N-Paint HBCU Tour this way: “What you do at the event is you come, and you turn up. When you turn up, you turn up to a limit you never thought you could. You do the karaoke contest for $100, which brings you completely out of your shells. You do a call out, which is calling out your advisors and directors as to pull them out their shells and see a side to them you’ve never seen, and you have a really good time painting portraits.”
When asked for her opinions on some of the paintings made, Thomas added: “This campus has some extremely artistic students. One young lady did the African woman with the afro. Her hair had gold glitter in it. One young lady did the ocean, and one painting had a beautiful drip to it. There were some gorgeous paintings.”
Turning up was not a problem at all for the students, mainly when their favorite songs played through a loud stereo system. Things kicked up with the karaoke contest, which saw volunteers compete for cash prizes. The contest was won by freshman Alexis Haigler. Her rendition of “Get Paid” by Young Dolph got the room pumped up. Haigler got things going as she performed with high energy, running across the room as the crowd sang along and cheered.
Haigler said: “It was definitely fun. I would have had fun even if I didn’t win. I just love jumping around. Everyone knows me. I jump around during my favorite songs, so I had a great time, a great experience.” Adding to this, she explained that due to participating in the karaoke contest, she didn’t get to do much painting. “I didn’t really get to paint anything because I was jumping around, half DJ-ing before the DJ got here and all types of stuff, but I definitely had a lot of fun with my SAC (Student Activities Committee) members, so shout out to SAC. I was jumping everywhere; I feel like that’s how I won. I didn’t even stand up on the table like I usually do. I was just running around, being my normal self.”
Haigler concluded by saying she would come back next time but would plan more time for painting.
Events such as this are definitely possible in the near future.
Thomas, when asked about coming back to FSU, said: “We would definitely be back. You all are going to have to hit your advisors up. We have a lot of events coming for the spring, a whole lot of events. Tell your advisors to pick one and bring us back out.”
