Why Young People Need to Vote
posted by Antonio Mitchell | October 2, 2020 | In OpinionOn November 3, 2020, a presidential election will be held that could shape the way that America runs for the next 4 years. This election is one of the biggest elections we have had in America because it could change the way our healthcare system , works and how our criminal justice system may be reformed. It will also help change the plan we have for climate change with the opportunity of putting more effort into making a difference in our environment.
With this election, college students, too, will be affected. Former Vice President Biden has a plan that will help community colleges be more affordable and “provide two years of community college or other high-quality training programs without debt for any hard-working individual looking to learn and improve their skills to keep up with the changing nature of work,” according to Biden’s campaign website. Also according to Biden’s campaign website, he also has a plan for 4-year universities making “public colleges and universities tuition-free for all families with incomes below $125,000,” which is great news to hear for upcoming college students and future generations behind them.
Now, we as young people need to get out to the polls. If we do not get out and vote, we cannot complain about how things operate in our state and out. If you feel like your voice is not heard that is not true because we, as young people, make up half of the voter population, but, in 2016, we had a 2% decrease in voting, according to the Brookings Institution.
As young people in this election, we have a lot going for ourselves if we really want our voices to be heard, it is going to have to be in the polls. If we want colleges to be more affordable for us and our kids in the future, we must vote. A fun fact for young people who do not want to be tied down to a two-party system, young people are “are 35%, a higher percentage of young voters identified with independent political views, rather than Republican or Democrat, than in the past three presidential elections,” according to the Brookins Institution.
On November 3, 2020, young people need to make our voice heard and fight for our right to rebuild this economy and help to eradicate student loan debt.
