ABC 11 pays FSU a visit
posted by Je'Lesa Jefferson | March 27, 2019 | In Arts and Culture, NewsFor many of the students in the Department of Communication, Languages, and Cultures, a career in some form of journalism could be right around the corner. Many of us are curious as to what that may entail, and luckily for us representatives from WTVD ABC 11 came on Tuesday, March 5 to answer our questions. On the panel were: Tom Donahue, assignment manager, Morgan Norwood, reporter, Glenn Proto, research director, Chris Hart, I-Team photographer, and Akilah Davis, reporter.
“Mr. Donahue … organized the whole event on their end and seemed enthusiastic about the outcome,” said Dr. Alexandru Stana, assistant professor in communication.
The representatives debunked a lot of misconceptions about journalism. “They highlighted that journalism work is not necessarily glamorous, and it’s not purely technical either,” said Dr. Stana.
Many of the things that our teachers discussed throughout the years were confirmed in the meeting with the ABC 11 representatives. “I know that students hear us, professors at FSU, saying many of these things over the years, but hearing them from established journalism professionals added a lot more weight to these things, I believe,“ said Dr. Stana.
Each representative introduced themselves by sharing their experiences and the road they took to get to where they are today. “You will get a lot of ‘no’s in this business. You will get a lot of people who might tell you what you are not capable of, but you’ve got to prove them wrong,” said multi-media journalist Davis. “If you’re not passionate, you won’t do well at the job… if this is what you want, you have to be persistent.”
Along with the question and answer session, representatives of the station discussed other opportunities available to FSU students.“Mr. Donahue mentioned that they would like to have such events on our campus regularly, either annually or bi-annually. They would like to get interns (and these are paid internships, which are becoming increasingly rare) from FSU. … I am optimistic about this connection,” said Dr. Stana.
For some of us graduation is just around the corner, and our future careers are on the horizon. If, by chance, you are ever in doubt about the future listen to Davis: “You create your own opportunity.” So, keep your head up.
