Actor Michael Gambon Dies, Age 82

Gambon was best known for the role of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the “Harry Potter” franchise, but enjoyed a long and successful career in acting even outside the halls of Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Gambon began his acting career in the mid 1960’s at London’s National Theatre, after being selected for the company by acting legend Sir Laurence Olivier. He regularly appeared at The National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company in roles such as Othello, Mark Anthony, and King Lear.
After his success in the theater, Gambon transitioned to screen acting, appearing in many TV series and films and earning 3 Olivier Awards and 4 BAFTA Awards. Gambon approached his role as Albus Dumbledore with great humility, once stating “I just stick on a beard and play me, so it’s no great feat.”
Adored by fans and co-stars alike, Gambon’s “Harry Potter” co-stars eulogized him on social media. In one Instagram story, actress Emma Watson wrote, “Thank you for showing us what it looks like to wear greatness lightly. We will miss you.” In a statement released by Gambon’s family, they state that he passed peacefully with his wife, Anne, and son, Angus by his side.
Throughout his 6 decade career, Sir Michael Gambon delighted, mystified, and thrilled audiences from The National Theatre, to the silver screen. He was once quoted saying, “Every part I play is just a variant of my own personality.” In his kindness, success, and humility he will live on in the hearts of audiences around the world and serve as a reminder to “wear greatness lightly.”
