All That’s Geekin’ at Comic-Con Weekend
posted by Brandon Owens | November 9, 2018 | In Arts and Culture, NewsThe 4th annual Fayetteville Comic-Con, which took place on Oct. 20-21 at the Crown Exposition Center, hosted a variety of attractions. Those who attended the event were in for an extraordinary experience. Numerous comics were on display like books at a library. Many vendors had their products in full view waiting for customers. With cosplayers, comics, manga, toys, merchandise, card playing, and video gaming, the convention stayed true to its motto, “If it’s Geek, We Got It!”
The cosplaying game was strong at Comic-Con. Several people came adorned in colorful costumes as their favorite characters for comics, manga, TV shows, and more. Some went the extra mile and used paints and makeup for more detailed looks, such as blood-stained zombies.
One cosplayer, Jacob Hecker, came as Kakashi Hatake from the Naruto series, as he loved the show and the character. When asked how he was enjoying Comic-Con, he explained, he loved Comic-Con, and that he has participated in it for the past four years. Hecker also described what he likes about the event: “I just love seeing people’s faces light up when you ask for pictures of them dressed as the characters they love. They just get so excited. It just makes their day, and I love that.”
Several actors and voice actors were also present at Comic-Con, taking pictures and signing autographs for fans.
Voice actress Veronica Taylor (who is best known for her role as Ash Ketchum from the popular Pokémon series) happily she said that she enjoyed Fayetteville. She added that “Everybody is so friendly and enthusiastic about the show. I think Comic-Con is such a necessary part of a community coming together, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
Actor Michael Copon, who is well known for his role as blue ranger Lucas Kendall from Power Rangers: Time Force, also gave his thoughts: “I love Comic-Cons. I think they’re a great marketing tool for people who are artists and comic book lovers and anything pop culture related. It gets the fans connected with artists and actors. We get to meet our fans, and it becomes a really cool circle of love and arts and everything all in one weekend, which is a really good time.”
Fayetteville Comic-Con brings everyone together. Michael Chaudhury, a founding member of the event, elaborated on this, explaining that the reason they started it was because after looking at events across the country, they decided to see if they can make one here in Fayetteville.
“A lot of people tell us that there are not that many outlets for geeks, nerds, anime fans, etc. There are not a lot of places for people to meet. Here they can meet new friends and enjoy themselves,” Chaudhury said.
Chaudhury heavily encouraged everyone (including Fayetteville State Broncos) to attend Fayetteville Comic-Con next year on Oct. 19-20.
