Batman vs. Superman Stages Epic Showdown
posted by Brian Johnson | March 22, 2016 | In Arts and CultureOn March 25, 2016 a new film aiming to reenergize the DC Comics movie franchise released into theaters featuring two of the most iconic comic book characters in not just DC Comics but in the history of all comics in a showdown to test a great question: If Batman and Superman fought against each other who would win?
Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice features these superheroes battling against each other in an ultimate duel between a darker, vulnerable mortal using the power of his mind and resources against an immortal with the power of invulnerability and immeasurable strength.
The story in the film is set eighteen months after the events of the massive attack within the city of Metropolis from the events of the movie Man of Steel. Superman, who is known in everyday life as Clark Kent, played by Henry Cavill, engaged in intense combat against his foe, General Zod, an evil alien overlord that is of the same species Superman, that left Metropolis in ruin. This movie serves as a sequel to Man of Steel as Bruce Wayne, who is secretly Batman, played by Ben Affleck, witnessed firsthand the destruction caused because of Superman’s battle. This makes Wayne passionate to defeat Superman through his vigilante alternate ego, believing he could be a danger to the entire planet.
The movie includes other familiar characters from the comics. Lex Luther, played by Jesse Eisenberg, is a lunatic genius bent on discovering new forms of power. He is the villain to both Batman and Superman in this film, schemes to have Superman killed and prove the gods can bow down to man, using Batman to prove his point. Also, a mysterious woman, played by Gal Gadot, approaches Batman to investigate him. She has a surprising role as the movie’s story continues.
The film is slow to delve into the importance of why these characters are personally motivated to fight justice through the use of flashbacks. And the pacing was confusing at times, but once the action started, it was electrifying, with a great amount of special effects throughout the film. The film explored themes of one’s trust in absolute power and the fear of that unknown power causing distrust. Ultimately Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice provides excellent entertainment for those who are fans of action and the movie might interest adults more than children with its attempt at complexity.
