Bronco football ‘21 season lands 1-1 record after the first two games
posted by DorMiya Vance | September 20, 2021 | In News, SportsAfter almost two years off the field, the Fayetteville State University football team has dedicated its efforts to improving player performance to achieve its goal: attaining a CIAA championship.
The now 1-1 FSU Broncos began the season with high energy defeating the Elizabeth City Vikings in the Down East Viking Football Classic, finishing the game 47 to 6. After this immense triumph, the Broncos traveled to battle the Wingate Bulldogs, which ended in a 21-40 loss and a plan to refocus the team goals for CIAA play.
What happened to the winning attitude of the Broncos after the Viking blowout? After game one, what was different for the Broncos after stepping into Bulldog territory?
Center Offensive Linemen, Greg Brooks, described the team’s energy and preparation from game one against the Vikings to game two battling the Bulldogs.
“Everyone was excited after coming off a year and a half without playing, so everybody was looking forward to game one. The energy was real high. The chancellor was expecting a lot, coaches expecting a lot, players expecting a lot, the school was expecting a lot.” Brooks said. “Game two, I feel like we were prepared, but I feel like we got off to a slow start and never recovered from it.”
The Broncos’ head football coach, Richard Hayes Jr., looks at the two games in the same light but emphasizes that chemistry goes a long way regarding the team’s performance on the field.
“We are not the 2019 Broncos. We have a lot of new faces, new coaching staff trying to get together right now.” Coach Hayes said. “Wingate is a powerhouse in Division 2, and that is an example of what we are trying to get to. Saturday, they jumped on us. Before we could blink our eyes, they jumped on us. It took us a while to wake up, but we outplayed them in the second half. First half, we got frazzled and did not know how to respond.”
Coach Hayes took the loss against Wingate as “a good experience to make them better for the conference.”
The Broncos go head-to-head Saturday, September 25, against the Virginia State Trojans, with kickoff starting at 7 p.m. in Luther Nick Jeralds Stadium, where the Broncos have yet to play for the 2021-2022 football season.
