Davis’s Request For Trade is a No-Go
posted by Amber Gladden | February 26, 2019 | In SportsNBA star, Anthony Davis, requested to be traded from the New Orleans Pelicans to the L.A. Lakers so that he could have a chance to consistently win and better his chances on winning a championship. The Pelicans opted out of the trade leaving Davis no choice but to finish the rest of the season with the Pelicans, and leaving the Lakers upset, not finding a star player to accompany Lebron James the rest of the season.
Davis has planned to play out the rest of his contract with the Pelicans and become a free agent in 2020. The Pelicans have wanted to sit the injury-prone star to keep his value high, but they cannot do so or the league will fine the Pelicans $100,000. It is mandatory that if a
player is in good health, they have to play.
On January 28, 2019, when Davis’s agent, Rich Paul, publicly announced that Davis wanted to be traded to a better team, Davis was fined $50,000. The NBA’s collective bargaining agreements prohibits players and agents from publicly requesting trades.
The Lakers were willing to trade Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, and Kyle Kuzma for the all-star Davis. That left the young NBA stars blindsided to whether their time with the Lakers would come to an end or not. Davis wanted to be traded to the Lakers to play alongside James in hopes of winning a championship in the years to come. However, the president of the L.A Lakers, Magic Johnson, said that Pelicans did not act in “good faith” when it came to the negotiation.
According to ESPN writer, Brian Windhorst, the communication between the Lakers and the Pelicans was almost nonexistent leading up to the trade deadline and the negotiations were not accurate. The Lakers offered Davis, and the Pelicans simply turned the other way.
According to USA Today, Magic Johnson explained that what happened, happened and that the process is a part of being in the league, but the Lakers are going to continue to move forward and try to win.
