Broncos Spring Sports Review
posted by Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson | May 4, 2018 | In News, SportsThe goal of every student-athlete at Fayetteville State University is to win their respective sports’ CIAA Championship. The fall semester saw Broncos football program make an appearance in the CIAA Championship and the women’s cross country claimed their first-ever CIAA championship. In previous issues of The Voice, we covered the women’s and men’s basketball programs extensively before their seasons ended in the quarterfinals of the CIAA Tournament. Four other Broncos sports programs also suited up in the spring.
BOWLING: The women’s bowling team has been the best and most consistent sports program of Fayetteville State for nearly two decades now. This season was no different as the Broncos went 49-1 overall before losing to Bowie State in the championship. In February, the Broncos gave head coach Bobby Henderson a historic career milestone of 1,000 victories. On March 12, another dominant show- ing gave FSU their 17th CIAA Southern division title in 18 years of conference sponsored play. Henderson ended up winning Coach of the Year in the CIAA and Savannah Starling earned 2018 CIAA Player of the Year. Four other Broncos earned spots on the All-CIAA team, a first in school history. As a team, Fayetteville State earned the highest team grade point average.
GOLF: At the time we go to print, we will not know how Fayetteville State’s golf program will do in the CIAA Championship on April 18- 20 in New Kent, Virginia. Junior golfer Isaiah Shaw has been playing great golf, and there’s a great chance he can score a victory after finishing second last year. Among FSU’s top 10 player low rounds, Isaiah Shaw owns 8 of the 10 rounds this season, including the top five. Shaw has 2 victories and 5 top five finishes in 6 events. Check out FSUBroncos.com’s feature story on Shaw possibly joining the ranks of FSU’s next great golfer. Adam Capps
has 2 top 10 finishes in 4 events, and Nick Pennix has one top 10 finish in 2 events. In the various competitions, the Broncos have placed 6th, 7th, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 4th overall.
SOFTBALL: Despite a 7-21 overall record, a 6-4 conference record has the Broncos in second place in the division after a sweep of Livingstone (combined score of 27-1). When FSU travels to Raleigh to play Saint Augustine, there is a chance that they can overtake first place in the division. April 30, the Broncos headlined by seniors HaLee Knowles, Shi-Cara Goins, Brittany Lee, and Maggie Smith travel to Salem, Virginia for the CIAA Championship. Smith leads the team with .375 batting average and Madison Mendoza leads the team with 7 home runs and 19 runs batted in.
TENNIS: We won’t know how Fayetteville State’s tennis team fares in the CIAA Tournament before this issue comes out. Neither will we know how they finished their regular season against Livingstone and Virginia Union. Among the 8 Broncos, sophomore Brittany Doss leads with 3 singles victories. The duo of Staisha Cain and Kayla Williams leads all the double teams with 3 victories.
