FSU Students Sleep Out
posted by Kinaya Gibson | November 21, 2023 | In NewsOn November 16, Fayetteville State University Food Pantry hosted “The Big FSU Sleep Out 2023” to support National Hunger and Homelessness Week from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The event’s purpose was to stand in solidarity with those unhoused and give participants a chance to experience what it is like for those in that community. Participants brought blankets, sleeping bags, foldable chairs, and more to choose to sleep on.
The event consisted of several testimonials from students and faculty who have experienced homelessness. Participants were put into groups to read stories based on true events of people who have been homeless. Residence Life and the School of Social Work lead simulations for participants to experience what it would be like going to welfare offices, asking family and friends for support, and/or seeking shelter. The event also served as a time to collect food, clothing, and toiletry donations.
The Sleep Out had several student participants from members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Student Government Association, L.E.A.D, National Council of Negro Women, and more.
The event ended with participants and hosts sleeping in the yard and coming together to fellowship and stay warm
