Broncos Sweep! 2023 XC Championships Recap
posted by Breasia Williams | November 21, 2023 | In News, SportsIn late October, the Fayetteville State University Broncos men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished first at the CIAA championships for the second year in a row.
On the women’s side, the Broncos scored 28 points to beat their runner-up, Winston-Salem State University and secure the win. The Broncos had three women in the top five finishers: Irene Jeptoo in first place, Daisy Jerop in second place, and Nia Gibson in third place. These women each earned All-CIAA Honors, along with two more of their teammates, Viola Korir and Repline Cheptoo who finished ninth and thirteenth.
The Broncos scored 56 points on the men’s side, beating their runner-up, Virginia Union University, and the rest of the competition. The men also had three runners in the top five finishers, led by Derrick Kipchumba who placed second in 26:19.6. Nathan Kipyego placed third in 26:28.4 and Hillary Toroitich, who was also named the 2023 CIAA runner of the year, placed fourth in 27:05.6. These men also received All-CIAA Honors, along with their teammate Brian Kiptanui, who finished in sixth place.
The men’s and women’s teams were coached to victory this season by the track and field program head coach, Inez Turner, who was named the CIAA cross country coach of the year!
