Chiefs Defeat 49ers In Super Bowl OT Thriller To Win 3rd Title In 5 Years
posted by Zaire Jones | February 20, 2024 | In SportsThe Kansas City Chiefs have won the Super Bowl once again beating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime. Kansas City have now won back-to-back Super Bowls and are the first team to do so since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots.
The game started with a bang, as the 49ers as they marched down to Chiefs territory. Niners running back Christian McCaffrey fumbled the ball in the red zone as the Chiefs took over. The 49ers would score their next few drives, with a field goal and a touchdown pass by receiver Jauan Jennings to Christian McCaffrey to make it 10-0 Niners.
Kansas City were struggling to get anything moving on offense in the first half. The 49ers were getting to Patrick Mahomes and getting him out of his comfort zone. One of the few positive drives for the Chiefs was when Mahomes threw a laser to Mecole Hardman Jr. to put the Chiefs in the red zone. The next play Isiah Pacheco would fumble and the 49ers would recover.
The Chiefs would finally get on the board towards the end of the first half with a field goal to make it a 10-3 ball game at halftime.
On the first drive of the second half, Mahomes and Pacheco had a miscommunication on a handoff but were able to recover. Two plays later, Mahomes threw an interception, and the 49ers took over.
Late in the 3rd quarter the 49ers muffed the punt and Kansas City would recover, giving them life.
On the very next play, Mahomes passed to a wide open Marquez Valdes-Scantling for a 16-yard touchdown to give Kansas City a 13-10 lead. This gave the 49ers offense some juice as they marched down the field as Brock Purdy passed to Jennings for a 10-yard touchdown to regain the lead. The extra point was blocked to make it a 16-13 ballgame.
After the touchdown by the Chiefs, the offense ramped up for both teams. Mahomes and Purdy both moved the offenses in the fourth quarter resulting in field goals.
The 49ers took a late 19-16 lead with under two minutes to go in the game. That was all the time Mahomes needed as he has been in that position before. The Chiefs would slowly march down the field led by Mahomes and Travis Kelce to 49ers territory. With a few seconds left in the game, Harrison Butker would tie it to get it in overtime.
The 49ers won the toss and received the ball first and got it going. The Chiefs defense was gassed and could not stop the 49ers passing and rushing attack. It was not until the 49ers got to the red zone where the 49ers would stall out and settle for a field goal.
Now it was the Chiefs turn and they used all of the clock to get in position to win the game. With 5 seconds left at the goal line, Mahomes threw to Hardman for the game-winning touchdown to win the Chiefs Super Bowl 58.
Mahomes won Super Bowl MVP, his third in his career with over 300 pass yards and two touchdowns.
Kansas City has now completed the dynasty with 3 rings in 5 years. The question is: now can they threepeat?
