Sports Profile: Joshua Williams
posted by Jada Jenkins | October 18, 2021 | In SportsJoshua Williams is a hometown legend in the making. Williams is one of the main stars on the Fayetteville State University’s football team and a leader on the defensive side of the ball.
A 2018 graduate of Jack Britt High School, he dominates on the field. A 6 -foot-3-inch, 197-pound senior who plays cornerback.
“Confident, hardworking, and funny” are the 3 words Williams’s longtime friend and teammate, Jordan Ferguson, used to describe him as a teammate.
“When I look over on the other side of the field, that’s who I want to see parallel to me. I know he’ll make the play,” says Brandon Barnes-Brown, also an FSU football player.
Over the preseason, Williams has had a lot of recognition from different football organizations. A NFL Draft analyst of The Draft Network has Williams as number 6 on their top 40 HBCU draft prospects. After only four weeks of football Williams has had 2 Food Lion player of the week honors.
“Extremely blessed and humble” is how Williams says he feels about his recognitions and accomplishments.
Williams has an NFL body, long arms, long legs, and the weight as well as the speed to be NFL material. He does not let the recognition change how he plays. He tries to stay calm and collected, Williams said in an interview.
At the start of the 2021-2022 academic year, the NCAA declared that athletes can begin to receive payments and endorsements from companies. This affected every division in the NCAA. Williams has been the first to have sponsorship by a major food chain: Church’s Chicken.
“I’m inspired by bright, highly-motivated HBCU students like Joshua Williams,” said Nicholas Perkins in a press release. Perkins, a double HBCU graduate is the franchise owner of Fuddruckers and owns the Church’s Chicken that sponsors Williams.
Williams is not just a star athlete, but he also has a 3.1 grade point average. Williams and Perkins are also a part of the same fraternity Omega Psi Phi Incorporated, according to Williams.
While Williams is receiving a lot more attention, he never forgets to shout out the ones who have helped him along the way.
“My teammates push me constantly to do my best,” Williams said.
He also states it has been a very long road to become the man he is today with his father George Williams as his biggest inspiration.
Williams feels like what he is doing is making a bigger impact for HBCU players all over bringing light to not just Division I HBCUs but the smaller Division II as well. HBCUs have been getting more recognition over the years but Williams feels as if there are still things to be done, starting with giving more players more recognition and sponsorships that will help along the way. There is no doubt that the attention Williams has received from different organizations and his recent sponsorship from the Church’s Chicken franchise has brought more attention to the FSU football program.
