Fatal Shootings Days Apart Claims the Lives of Three

On September 19 around 4:25 p.m., officers in the city of Fayetteville were called to the 1100 block of Southern Avenue. According to the Fayetteville Observer, Sergeant Jeremy Glass stated that the officers who arrived on the scene found Nicoda Melvin with a gunshot wound to her head. After being rushed to Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Melvin succumbed to her wounds and was pronounced dead.
Following the September 19 shooting, two more lives were claimed from gunshot wounds, and two were injured, some related to the first victim.
On September 22, two teenagers were killed in a home invasion in Cumberland County. The names of the victims are Konye Melvin, 16, and his cousin Marquez Melvin, 19, cousin and brother, respectively of Nicoda Melvin.
The incident took place around 5 a.m. when someone entered the home and fired their weapon. There were two other individuals present at the time. Maurice Melvin, Jr., 19, Nicoda’s cousin and Marquez’s brother, was also shot during the invasion. He was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. According to WRAL, the fourth victim who was shot has not been named, but injuries sustained were not life threatening.
Police have arrested 27-year-old Travis Jefferson near a middle school in Virginia in connection with Nicoda Melvin’s death, according to WTVD. Jefferson, who lived with Nicoda Melvin, was charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm, but has not yet been extradited to Cumberland County, according to the Fayetteville Observer.
It is still unclear if he was involved in the other four killings.
