Fayetteville State University’s SGA Encourages its Students to Vote with “Trotting to the Polls” Event
posted by Breyonna Hardy | November 15, 2022 | In NewsFayetteville State University’s SGA encouraged Broncos to vote in the 2022 midterm elections with their “Trotting to the Polls” event on November 4.
At 11 a.m., students gathered on campus at the Rudolph Jones Student Center to support the event and vote. The event was established by the Student Government Association and voter registration education and mobilization efforts in hopes of encouraging students to show up to vote in the midterm elections.
Prominent student organizations such as SGA, Fayetteville State Royal Court, Black Millennium, Bronco Ambassadors were in attendance. Joining them were members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Zeta Phi Beta along with the general Bronco student population.
News crews such WTVD news and the Fayetteville Observer were also in attendance to capture a true Bronco moment as the broncos began to walk to the polls.
The walk was led by SGA President Maya Martin as the Broncos traveled from the Founders’ Seal at the student center to the recreation center at Seabrook Park where the polls were located. This moment of solidarity gave first-time voters and current students the opportunity to cast their votes.
After arriving at Seabrook Park, students went inside the recreation center to either register to vote for their first time, register in Cumberland County, or update their registration so they can have their vote counted.
After voting, the students reconvened outside where they had the chance to reflect on voting, whether it was for the first time or coming back to vote.
Shamya Brawner, a senior in healthcare administration, voted for the first time in the hopes of more students like herself to come out and vote.
“I hope that more people can actually go out and vote,” Brawner said. “I believe that the younger generation can make a difference and they’re not, so I really hope that more people can actually come out and see how much of a difference they can make.”
FSU’s Mr. Senior and accounting major Jah-Mez Coley stated that the goal was get students to come out vote because their voices matter along with their vote.
“The goal was to make sure that we get people on campus to vote and to know the importance of voting,” Coley said. “We did that today with some our ambassadors; they were able to talk and give a little more information and just walking over together as Broncos and students.”
