Broncos Open Season With a Win Over Benedict College
posted by Altwond Andrews | September 18, 2019 | In News, SportsThe first home football kickoff took place on September 7. Our home team steamrolled the Benedict College Tigers with a 35-21 win.
Surprisingly, it wasn’t the Broncos’ offense that scored first. Special teams and the defensive unit smelled blood and struck first.
Kicker Shawn Andrews literally kicked things off with a 34-yard field goal for the first points of the game. Linebacker Chrishon Springs had a scoop and score for 21 yards. Wide receiver Brandon Smith picked up a punt recovery for a six-yard touchdown. Quarterback Collyn Anderson had a rather efficient game throwing 16-28 for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Jayden Maynor hauled in an amazing 68-yard reception for a touchdown. Tyeous Sharpe, another wide receiver, had an eight-yard touchdown on a slant and catch.
The Broncos’ defense really showed up by scoring nine points as a unit. Lockdown corners Joshua Williams and Brandon Barnes-Brown both granted the defense two turnovers in the air with two interceptions each.
This suffocating defense held Benedict to a measly three rushing yards and 66 passing yards, a total of 69 yards. They also caused five turnovers, three fumbles, and two interceptions.
Linebacker Nigel Peele lead the way on defense with 10 tackles. Jerome Bentley, Brandon Tate, and Keyshawn James each finished with a total of six tackles.
Keyshawn James was also named Food Lion Defensive Lineman of the Week. On top of his six tackles, 2.5 were for loss, with 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble.
On September 14, the Broncos didn’t fare so well, losing to the Wingate Bulldogs 24-34.
The road to the CIAA Championship has started, and the Broncos already have one win under their belt. Can they get their momentum back after their first loss?
