Fayetteville’s Biggest Homeless Campsite to be Cleared.
posted by Kayla Mady | May 2, 2023 | In NewsOn April 24, Fayetteville decided to deal with the issue of homelessness. City officials say the city will clear the biggest campsite at Gillespie Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Freeway.
According to city officials, the city plans on pushing those who live at the site to utilize resources and try to give them housing. City officials claim campsites such as these are as safety hazards and those who live there, live in unsanitary conditions.
Although the city plans to clear the homeless out, those who live on-site have said in previous interviews with other outlets that they do not want to leave. People at the campsite consider themselves as a community, and are worried to leave each other behind. The fact that they have to leave by May 3 is all so surreal and sudden. They will be cited for trespassing if they are not gone by then.
Loren Bymer, the marketing and communications director of Fayetteville, told WTVD: “We understand that we’re not going to solve homelessness with these efforts but we’re doing our best to manage what we can with the resources we have available.”
Fayetteville will be trying to aid the homeless and help them with resources.
Fayetteville officials plan to clear out at least three other homeless campsites. There is no set deadline or clear timeline for when this will be happening. All is known is that the issues of homelessness and mental health are being heavily discussed.
