Feeling Safe (Update)

By: Jerone Gray

The first Safe zone training session last month had a successful turnout! Just over 30 students, staff, and faculty members attended the Safe zone event that was held at Shaw Auditorium.

Dr. Emily Lenning, Safe zone Consultant, presented a detailed and informative PowerPoint about what Safe zone is as a program and how it benefits the LGBTQ community. She covered many “do’s and don’ts,” and effectively lead an open discussion between the attendees.

Communication Professor, Brandi Berry, was in the training session and she stated, “It went great. Dr. Lenning is an excellent teacher and can talk about black, white, gay, and straight individuals, with no hesitation and that tells me she is confident.”

Other attendees also agreed that the Safe zone training session was a success. Some especially liked the tips that were offered on how to understand and respect race and sexuality. Others mostly appreciated the mere fact that Fayetteville State University is open to having a “safe zone” for the LGBTQ community.
