FSU and FTCC agree on a $10k Pathway for FTCC Graduates
posted by Dominque Elliott | October 3, 2018 | In NewsFayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College partnered together to coordinate a $10,000 pathway agreement for FTCC graduates that help enable students to complete an online bachelor’s degree at FSU. According to the Fayetteville University website, the agreement will provide an opportunity for FTCC graduates to, “access affordable bachelor’s degrees in accounting, birth to kindergarten (non-teaching), criminal justice, fire and emergency services administration, business administration (General), intelligence studies, nursing, professional studies, psychology and sociology.” Even though the courses are online, FSU plans to provide face-to-face participation for students when needed.
The agreement was signed by Fayetteville State University’s Chancellor James Anderson and Fayetteville Technical Community College’s President J. Larry Keen, according to FSU’s website. When inquired on the issue through email, Chancellor Anderson reported:
“The decision to offer a $10,000 online four-year degree was influenced by two factors. First, both FSU and the UNC system have emphasized the core values of Access, Affordability, and Quality in their respective Strategic Plans. In addition, the groups who often have problems obtaining college degrees are those from low income and/or rural populations. The $10,000 online degree seeks to bring equity of opportunity to all residents of North Carolina.
The second factor that motivated us was the high percentage of students who are struggling with the immense burden of student debt. In the U.S. only mortgage debt is higher. Some of the For-Profit universities charge exorbitant prices while offering less student engagement and academic programs that are not nationally ranked. All eleven of the FSU online programs are ranked in the top ten nationally.”
LendEDU, a marketplace for financial services, such as private student loans, reports that the average debt in North Carolina for student borrowers in 2017 was $26,164. Nationally, the average debt for student borrowers was $28,288 in 2018, which is an upswing from the $27,975 in debt for 2017. Therefore, the $10,000 pathway eliminates around almost half of the statewide and national average debt incurred by college students. FSU and FTCC $10k pathway agreements is a strong step towards the UNC system providing more affordable education for its’ attending students, and exemplifying that the UNC colleges, Fayetteville University Students, and Fayetteville Tech Community College are institutions for the people.
