FSU Basketball Catch-up
posted by Westley Reaves Jr. | February 13, 2024 | In News, SportsFayetteville State University basketball is close to an end as the CIAA Tournament in Baltimore gets closer and closer. The FSU women’s basketball team is having an amazing season, ranked nationally at number 25 in the country. Also, the men’s team is battling out their season, beating a very solid Winston Salem State University team.
Also, FSU players on both teams have had great success this season as well. Aniylah Bryant, on the women’s side, surpassed the 1000 career points milestone in a win versus Johnson C. Smith University. Newcomer guard Tairell Fletcher averaged 14 points per game in his first season with the Broncos. And Fletcher’s teammate, senior forward Kaleb Coleman shot lights out 38 percent from three.
New interim head coach Tyreece Brown and assistant coach Charnissa Chillers lead the women’s team. They are right now 20-2 overall, while in conference play, they are 13-1. The only losses this season were to an out-of-conference opponent at Lander University and conference opponent Johnson C. Smith, both away matches.
Bryant has had a career season so far, already going over her career season high in steals with 93, beating her previous highest, 70 in a season. She also has a career high in points per game with 16.3, 22 games into the season. But of course, she is not the only reason for their success so far.
Her dynamic fastbreak combination is helped by her point guard Talia Trotter. Trotter helps a lot with the fastbreak game the Broncos have when causing turnover after turnover, effective when combined with her elite on ball defending, speed and passing.
Led by coach Luke D’Alessio, the men are 14-10 overall and 9-5 in the CIAA. They have done this by having the Capel Arena be a fortress, with a great 11-1 record when playing on home court.
Before the CIAA Tournament kicks off February 26, the next couple games on the schedule are first the men’s team will face rival Winston-Salem State away on February 13. Next the women’s team will be Winston-Salem State away on February 15.
