FSU Basketball Review: Two Wins and Women Head to CIAA As #1
posted by Westley Reaves Jr. | February 21, 2023 | In News, SportsBoth Bronco women and men basketball teams won their contests on Senior Day against St. Augustine. The women’s team won their game 76 to St. Augustine 44, while the men won their game 54 to St. Augustine 41.
With this win, the Broncos women’s team are number 1 seed and champs in the Southern Division of CIAA, leading with a conference record of 14 and 2 and divisional 9 and 1, overall, 18 and 6. They now head into the CIAA Tournament in Baltimore.
On the women’s side, senior Imani Elliott, coming off her career high 30-point game, was this time third in scoring with 8 points. Aniylah Bryant led the team with 14 points and 5 rebounds.
The women’s team did not have a great shooting game, only averaging 29.7% from three, and also shooting 52.9% from the free throw line. Field goal percentage was not as good either, sitting at 37.8%.
This win came from the Broncos’ good defensive display, getting steals and scoring off of turnovers that turned into 26 points. They also took advantage of rebounding, especially on the offensive end, which led to great second chance points, with 17 in that category.
Even with the bad shooting percentage the Broncos controlled the game the entire way through, not allowing St. Augustine to come back at all. Several times they were leading by more than 25 points.
The men’s team game was similar to the women’s game with the poor shooting. The men shot field goal 35.1% and 24% from three. Also, it was the Broncos’ defensive display that won them the game.
The Broncos had 19 points off of turnovers and 16 second chance points as well. Leading the Broncos was Tyler Foster with 19 points and 7 rebounds. While Cress Worthy came second with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Lastly, Kaleb Coleman had 10 points and 9 rebounds almost getting a double-double.
