FSU Broncos Receive New Basketball Courts as Promised by Chancellor
posted by DorMiya Vance | October 5, 2021 | In News“When I arrived in March, I listened to concerns coming from students and student leaders. This $1.5 million investment in upgrading our residential halls and the investment in providing our students with an outdoor basketball facility are things they asked for. This is just the beginning in our efforts to improving FSU facilities and providing a better quality of life for our students,” is what Fayetteville State University Chancellor Darrell T. Allison said when he first announced the investment in FSU residences halls and facilities in May 2021.
Four months later, on September 28, 2021, Chancellor Allison and SGA President Sydney Harris cut the ribbon for the grand opening of the new FSU outdoor basketball courts.
Several students and staff joined the grand opening. The Marching Bronco eXpress opened the event with a few band tunes for the crowd to enjoy. Mr. Ray Thomas broadcast and emerging media manager of Bronco iRadio hosted the event right outside the Capel arena.
During his speech. Mr. Thomas spoke about Chancellor Allison and how he demonstrated a passion for understanding the students’ wants and needs for growing the student engagement on campus, “over the course of the past six months under the leadership of Chancellor Allison, the construction of the outdoor basketball courts and renovation of the tennis courts has been realized.”
Members from various sports and intramural teams participated in the event and members from SGA, FSU athletics, and FSU student media.
“Students, this is all about you. This is not about old folks. This is not about the chancellor.” Chancellor Allison said. “When I came on the grounds, right, and met with some of the student leaders, just students in general, just looking at it, I felt that we could do better by you. It’s not all about books. Most of your time is outside the classroom. I just want to make sure that you have a campus. If you choose to go home and hang out, that’s fine, but if you choose to be here over the weekend, you’ve got things to do.”
The ceremony concluded with the audience counting down the big ribbon cutting by Chancellor Allison and SGA President Sydney Harris. Students and athletes flooded the courts to play pickup basketball games and indulge in free, frozen treats provided by FSU staff.
As of now, the courts are open for the enjoyment of FSU students. To use the courts, all FSU students must present their Broncos ID cards.
Business hours for the courts are Sunday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays the courts are open from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m.
