FSU Library to Display George Floyd Mural
posted by Brittany Doss | August 28, 2020 | In Arts and Culture, NewsOn Wednesday, August 26, Fayetteville State University hosted a mural acceptance ceremony outside of the Charles W. Chesnutt Library.
The mural, which will be on display at the library, is of the late George Floyd who fell victim to police brutality earlier this year on May 25. His death incited protests throughout the country with the Black Lives Matter movement at the forefront.
Many people took to social media to post their reactions of this tragedy (now placed among countless others). However, some, such as Carlos Tolentino for example, turned to artistic ways to express reactions. Tolentino, a Tattoo Artist at Best Ink of Fayetteville, is no stranger to creating meaningful art.
Inspired by the political climate around him, Tolentino went to work, letting his creatively chosen canvas do the talking for him. The end result spoke volumes, and was initially displayed downtown Fayetteville.
After serving its purpose there, he received a call for his work to continue to reach others. This time, it would be at our beloved FSU campus. Tolentino readily agreed to donate his art to the university.
When asked about Tolentino’s hopes as students and the community continue to appreciate his work, the artist shared that this was his “way to pay respect,” and that he would like for “everybody to pay their respects.”
Nicholle Young, a library technician at FSU, is looking forward to having the mural join the history-rich archives (located on the fourth floor of the library) here on campus. Young looks forward to it “being a conversational piece on exhibit, whether it be on campus for students at events or in locations like museums.”
