Homecoming is Back, SGA President Weighs In
posted by DorMiya Vance | September 20, 2021 | In NewsPlans for Homecoming have resumed after a suspension of plans that was announced August 31, due to low vaccination rates, according to a statement released by Fayetteville State University officials. Student vaccination rates increased from 22 percent to 56 percent. Rates of vaccination have increased among faculty and staff have also increased to 76 and 66 percent respectively.
This week, SGA President, Sydney Harris, released a letter to the student body further discussing the suspension of the year’s Homecoming planning. The letter states that the suspension of Homecoming plans is a result of the COVID-19 case increase across the Cumberland County area.
According to the letter, the call to action now is “#Mission60”: “Mission 60 is an official initiative to reach a 60% campus-wide vaccination rate in order to have Homecoming 2021 and is comprised of various events and activities to help reach our campus-wide goal.”
This push for higher vaccination rates includes: “’dorm storms,’ pop-up walks to the vaccination site, a percentage tracker in RJSC, and Instagram live town-halls.”
In light of many unanswered questions and spur-of-the-moment announcements, President Harris cleared the air by listing some insight for the student body:
· “If you live on campus or are a commuter with at least one (1) face-to-face class, you are included in our 60%.
· Bronco Express Bucks can be redeemed anywhere you can shop on campus (Spirit Shop, Grill, Chick-fil-A, Cafe, C3Store, Eco Grounds, Book Store, McAlister’s, vending machines).
· The Mobile Vaccine Clinic is located outside the Collins Building (right in front of RJSC) weekdays from 1 PM –7 PM.
· Even if you only have your first dose, still upload your vaccination card; you still count towards the 60%, and you will still receive a portion of the $500 Bronco Express Bucks
· In order to be counted in our 60%, you must upload your vaccination card at https://uncfsu.medicatconnect.com. We ask that you do so before Thursday, Sept. 16th at, 5 PM.
· If you have uploaded your vaccination card and have not received your Bronco Express within 24-72 hours, please contact Student Accounts Services at (910) 672-1155 or Student Health Services at (910) 672-1259. You have until September 25, 2021, to receive this incentive.”
President Harris has encouraged all students and staff of FSU to be positive, “regardless of one’s personal beliefs or mentality behind the vaccine,” while striving to achieve #Mission60
COVID-19 protocols will be in place for Homecoming events, including requiring masks for indoor events and recommending masks for crowded outdoor events. Vaccination or proof of a negative test within 72 hours of the event will be required for admittance to Homecoming events.
