FSU Women’s Basketball Beats Coker in Overtime
posted by Amber Gladden | December 5, 2018 | In SportsOn November 14, the Fayetteville State Women’s Basketball team defeated Coker College, 61-59, in overtime at the Capel Arena. This big win was also the season opener for the ladies.
Brittany Drumgoole, a senior transfer from South Carolina State University, was the Broncos’s game-leader with 18 points and five assists. It was her four-point play with three seconds left on the clock that gave the Broncos the lead and won the game.
Drumgoole’s contested three-point shot gave them a 60-57 lead. From the excitement of the shot, a player from the bench stormed the court in celebration, but the excitement led to a technical foul, because players are not allowed to run on the court before the game is finished. Shay Jackson from the Coker Cobras hit both of the technical foul shots that put the score at 60-59. Following the technical shots, Drumgoole hit her bonus shot that put the final score at 61-59.
The thoughts Drumgoole said were going through her head in those last seconds of overtime were: “I gotta make it. Regardless if I miss it or not I’ll take the blame from my teammates. I can pick myself up and go on to the next day. I just knew they were depending on me so I had to step up and take the big shot.”
During overtime, Coker took the lead 53-49 with 1:24 left. Shantel Bennet put the score at 53-51 by knocking down her two free throws. Chantel Williams followed with a lay-up to tie the score back up 53-53.
The score was eventually tied 55-55 until Drumgoole hit free throws back-to-back giving the Broncos a 57-55 lead with 23 seconds left on the clock. Aloni McFarland from Coker then scored a lay-up with 14 seconds remaining. These plays then led up to the big shot that won the game.
Before overtime, the Broncos came out very strong and aggressive in the first half starting out with an 11-7 lead. They held their own leading up to halftime with a score of 2724. At the beginning of the third, they started to lose their way. Head Coach Serena KingColeman described it as saying “It seems like it was a lid on the basket.”
The ladies had only made 3 of 13 field goal shots taken in the third quarter and they only scored nine points to the Cobras 16 points. By the end of the third they were down 40-36, but they never let the Cobras pull too far away to where they couldn’t catch up.
Aminata Johnson from FSU finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and an important layup from her put FSU in the lead at 48-46. Erin Houser from Coker came right back at FSU and tied the score 48-48 with 17 seconds left. FSU attempted to score before the regulation buzzer but missed.
Once the fourth quarter hit each team went basket for basket keeping the score closer and closer. Overtime came and FSU Women’s Basketball team came out on top with the win putting their record at 2-1.
