Honduran Caravan in Need of Help
Honduras is a country in Central America that is currently suffering from numerous issues such as crime, extreme poverty, starvation and more. As stated on Fox News, “The World Bank said Honduras has ‘the highest levels of economic inequality’ in Latin America.” With these daily factors, more than 7,000 Hondurans decided to migrate to the United States to seek a better lifestyle. The Honduran caravan left San Pedro Sulas, Honduras on October 12 and was assembled by a grass-root social media campaign.
The number of people in the caravan has shifted as other people have joined it and others have died. According to New York Times, the “health of those in the caravan has deteriorated. Local aid groups noted a rise in conjunctivitis, respiratory illness, fever and diarrhea.” It is very saddening that individuals would have to endure any of these ailments to improve their life. It has been said that the group is travelling 20 miles per day; however, the hot and humid temperature has slowed down their progress. The reactions of the locals from Guatemala and Mexico have varied. Fortunately, for some, they were friendly and welcomed the migrants. Both countries “greeted them with an outpouring of support, preparing food, handing out water and providing rides. Some have offered the floors of their homes and businesses for sleeping, and menial jobs if participants wanted to abandon the journey.”
Dara Lind of the Vox, wrote “If the migrant caravan didn’t exist, President Donald Trump might have needed to invent it.” This is because this movement is benefiting Donald Trump himself. He insists that the very existence of this caravan is because the immigration laws in our country are weak because of the Democratic party. Therefore, along with the Republican party, Trump has been strongly arguing for stricter immigration policies. During Trump’s first presidential ad in 2015, he used an image of immigrants appearing to be from South America, to encourage others to join him. However, the picture was checked and was found to have been taken in Morocco. Although he did not have the evidence that he wanted three years ago, he has it now.
The main question that everyone is asking is, “What will happen to the immigrants once they have reached the US border?” The mid-term election is on November 6, 2018. With this event, there is a high chance that Trump may get what he wants with the stricter policies and to prevent Central American migrants from coming into the United States legally. Some of the migrants who have legal papers with them but there is a large number who cannot afford them. As the number of immigrants changes daily, what will happen to them is unknown but there is a high chance that they will not be able to enter the U.S. The New York Times stated that the “U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained some 396,579 people who crossed the southern border with Mexico illegally from October 2017 to September 2018.”
