Are Active Shooter Drills Necessary?
Everyone remembers the days where their school would perform unannounced active shooter drills and they would all huddle in a corner of the classroom sitting in the dark, wondering, “Is this necessary?”. That is the same question that you and many others around the United States may be wondering.
In 2019, there have been a total of 22 school shootings in the United States (Lou and Walker). A survey by the Pew Research Center reveals that 57 percent of teens claim to worry about possible school shootings. This same survey shows that 63 percent of parents worry that their child might be involved in a school shooting (“Majority of Teens”). Gun violence is a consistently growing problem in the United States that needs to be solved not by preparing for the event, but rather stopping it as a whole.
Active shooter drills do not help the case against gun violence, but they are striking fear into high schoolers. “Law enforcement officials and many school administrators say they are crucial for preparing and safeguarding students, but methods vary widely and now include drills that child trauma experts say do little more than terrify already anxious children” (Williamson). When a drill is unannounced, a student can be caught off guard, resulting in a frightening experience. Also, the drill cannot prepare a student for the emotions and thoughts that run through a person’s head during the real thing. These drills are teaching students how to protect themselves during a shooting rather than solving the actual issue.
Psychologists and teachers are urging against active shooter drills as they add layers of anxiety and depression to already frantic students. Instead, they recommend teaching strategies to prevent shootings such as identifying and reporting troubled students (Williamson).
What do you think about active shooter drills? Do they help or hurt high school students?
