The Spooky City of the Greek Coast
While the east coast of the United States was suffering from the dangerous Hurricane Florence this month of September, the Greek coast was being covered by spider webs. The people living by the beach of Aitoliko, Greece woke up on Friday, September 21, with a surprise of silver spider webs 1,000 feet long that draped over the bushes and plants. Residents within the area have stated that it was normal to see some insects and bugs nearby, however, it was not normal for the long bodies of spider to be around.
According to Maria Chatzaki, a professor of molecular biology and genetics at the University of Thrace, that the critters are called Tetragnatha spiders. She stated that it is common to see the spiders building their webs close to water. Also, she mentioned that,” …It’s as if the spiders are taking advantage of the conditions and are having a kind of party.” The spiders are supposedly in their mating season and reproduce to have a new generation.
According to Fotis Pergantis, president of the Messolonghi National Lagoon Park, the simpler reason for why the eight-legged insects chose the specific area is that gnats reside there. Gnats, that are smack mosquito-like insects that only live for two or three days, are the spider’s favorite snacks. Their purpose in life is to reproduce which is a great time during the season in Greece as Pergantis explains, ““When these temperatures last long enough, we can see a second, third and fourth generation of gnats and end up with large amounts of their populations.” Therefore, the more gnats there are, the more spiders there will be.
The residents of Aitoliko feared for their lives as the believed the spiders could possibly be poisonous and dangerous. They began to worry that their now spooky city with spiders crawling everywhere will not be their home anymore. However, they were mistaken as they are not dangerous but the event that has produced a spiderweb covered area the size of three football fields is only a “seasonal phenomenon” as stated by Chatzaki. Also, it is only a “simple prey-predator phenomenon,” said Pergantis. The spiders will soon die, and their little “party” will be over. The citizens of Aikolito are happy that the spiders will be gone soon but they are somewhat angry as they will be the ones to clean up the mess.
