El Día Nacional de la Huelga
posted by Julianne DePaz | May 4, 2018 | In La VozAunque este evento nacional ocurrió hace dos meses, sigue siendo muy relevante hoy.
The National Walkout Day
Even though this nationwide event occurred two months ago, it is still very relevant today. According to Washington Post, Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old who attended Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida committed multiple murders. He killed 17 people in total who were his classmates and some faculty members. The weapon that was used was an AR-15-style rifle. This massacre took place on February 14, 2018. Not long after, Cruz was sent to prison and is isolated from others for his safety. There are people who attempt to defend him by stating that he has psychological problems and that this was the reason why he stormed his high school and started shooting.
This horrific massacre has brought up many issues and problems that should have been addressed with all the other mass shootings in the United States. The survivors of this mass shooting and their friends have used their griefs to make statements. They have become activists and advocates of their beliefs and rights. This is what resulted in the national school walkout on March 14 at 10 a.m. and lasted for 17 minutes to honor those people who were killed at Stoneman Douglas.
This nationwide protest is both a protest and a memorial. All schools across the United States that wanted to participate, walked out of their schools or universities to honor those who have been murdered. The purpose of this was to convince lawmakers to alter the gun control laws to be stricter. EMPOWER is the organization that planned this action and created the demands that they hope Congress will acknowledge. According to CNN, they were: “ban assault weapons, require universal background checks before gun sales and to pass a gun violence restraining order law that would allow courts to disarm people who display warning signs of violent behavior.”
The idea of this walkout was derived from EMPOWER, a youth branch of the Women’ March. As evident from their website, they had more than 2,500 walkouts planned. They had organized the walkouts from their own tool kits and provided them to the local student organizers. The kits had a guide on how to create a proper walkout and letters to the administrators to request permission to participate. Lastly, it included a statement of students’ rights. EMPOWER only asked those who were involved with a school to join the walkouts due to safety concerns. To those who were much older and wished to join in, they wore orange and walked out of their jobs for 17 minutes. The organizations famous statement is, Enough is Enough!
All schools were encouraged to participate in the walkouts, however not all wished to do so. There were many schools who allowed their students to join in with security for the whole event. At the same time, some schools have forbidden their students to participate in walkouts because of safety issues and the creation of a disruption of classes. There were punishments stated by the schools if their students disobeyed them. The students were to face disciplinary actions such as unexcused absences, lowering of their grades and even suspension.
The students have the right to express their opinions and to protest due to the First Amendment. According to Vera Eidelman from the American Civil Liberties Union, schools could punish the students who miss class for joining the walkout. However, they cannot “discipline students more harshly because they are walking out to express a political view or because school administrators don’t support the views behind the protest.”
